hey everyone..... i was wondering if anybody had pictures of the "Dover" New
Jersey polka thingy that went on years ago..... my mom always talks about
it, and just about every other person i've met at polka dances up here in
the northeast has talked about it with me..... but i have no clue since i'm
only 16?????? everytime we go to a polka fest and my mom sees the sign for
the get off exit for "Dover" i have to hear the life story of that
place..... everybody says i would have loved it there, but i don't really
know what it looked like..... i heard there were 6 hours of polka music
too!!!!

so, if anybody has pictures they can send me so i can see what my mom keeps
talking about!!!!! : ) thanx.........

Nick...near the kitchen pictures were posted of people, and bands that played
at Dover, NY. Contact Mike Niemiec to see were they all went to. Time for a
Dover, NJ web site.
Who was the last band to play at Dover Polanka? Ask Mom.

Yes Nick, Dover was Polka Madness at it's BEST! It was THE PLACE to
play and THE PLACE to go dancing. From a musicians standpoint, if you
played Dover you knew that your band was special. It was the greatest
thing to do on Sundays. It drew people from Pennsylvania, New Jersey,
New York, and New England. Many romances and friendships grew from
Polka Heaven callled Polonia Acres. You would start out listenting to
Ed & Chet from 9-noon on the radio. Start your drive with picnic
basket in hand. Start listening to Johnny Stavins starting from
noon-3. I remember the days when you paid admission based on a car
load. If you had ten people in the car you payed one price. Later on
it changed to a per person admission charge. The bartenders were
great. You were always made to feel welcome. People looked forward
to meet up at Dover each and every Sunday. Bands played for 5 hours
not 4. Then the greatest part was continuing with the polka fun by
stopping at Bayway on the way home and then after Bayway going to the
Starlight Lounge in Linden. "Those were the days my fiend, I thought
they'd never end." So Nick, when Mom talks about it over and over
it's because the fun shared by all during those times will always be
remembered OVER & OVER. Your goal should be to find another place
like Dover and create your own memories but remember, someday I hope
that your children will say to you, everytime Dad passes this place he
talks about it OVER & OVER!

These posts have brought back some absolutely pleasant memories of all
the times I went to Dover when I was a kid and even after I moved to
CA. That was a place to remember along with all the friends that
were made at these fantastic dances.. Wish there were more places
like that around to fill in the void.

Do you remember where in Dover it was located?
It was off of center grove road in Randolph NJ right past the county college of Morris campus, my friend lives in Randolph and today I went to visit him, we took a ride and I'm pretty sure I located the area where it used to be, it is and has been for a while since Johnny Stavins sold the property, it became an upscale housing development, the road that led into the polonka is named Wiltshire, if im correct I remember a lake on the grounds and going over a small creek then it was straightahead. In 1972 my uncle took me there, it was my very first polka dance, I was in 7th grade, the band he wanted me to see was called Happy Louie and I believe it was one of the Saturday night dances, it was packed, I instantly became a diehard happy Louie fan and followed him until he retired, I'm still friends with him and Julie, I used to bring my reel to reel tape recorder to the dances, I recorded Louie live there and also Eddie Forman, if you go to Amazon music you can hear and purchase a collection of recordings I made of Louie, just type in happy Louie live volume 2.
